Nathan,

Thanks for posting this, I printed it and put it on our music school's bulletin board for our students to see. I'd like to see more on the technique for mapping the harmonic rhythm. Is there a formal methodology for this?

Just as an update to the LDS Toolbar mentioned above:

I have now made it so that you can use the built-in Firefox capabilities to "Customize..." it so that you can pick which elements you would like to keep. You can also, using both the Firefox "Customize..." abilities and the Toolbar's preferences, choose whether to display Icons, Text, or Both for the buttons.

In addition, the toolbar will now come in 5 different languages with easy switching capability.

At least, this should all happen as soon as Mozilla.org approves the next release.

Donna,
Thanks for your reply to this list. I agree that it's completely tasteless to arrange something "in the style of Mozart," or anybody else for that matter. However, I believe in applying a more broadly defined style to every piece. Is it in modern art song style? Is it neoclassical? Is it pop? What type of pop? If you switch from the Classical period to 50s rock in the middle of a piece, it is quite likely not a thoughtful arrangement. Generally, a composer should have a deliberate style choice which is consistent throughout the piece (even if that choice is "plain Jane" melody and block chords). Of course, novelty pieces are excepted.

Again, I'm glad you took the time to read my blog, and I hope you will find more here that interests you in the future.

Dear Nathan,
I like the 10 commandments for the most part except one, and that is #4. I am a composer and arranger, and I would never change the chord structure or rhythm, and a real pet peeve of mine is the "apply a recognizable music style" way of arranging. Trust me-- no one wants to play Happy Birthday in a Mozart style. Why not just play Mozart's works themselves? I guess as a teaching tool, you might want to show how any song can be played/arranged in any style, but beyond that, they're not appealing as performance pieces. Find your own style and arrange accordingly. This is just my opinion. Most arranging I do is simplified songs for my beginning students (I can't buy what I want because it's not out there, so I do it myself). If I change the rhythm or the chords, then it's not the song anymore! My 6-year-old students can tell when they hear a cheap, knockoff arrangement. (I do what Dan Coates does, in a sense.) Anyway, just my two cents.

I'm a fellow "plugin" development dreamer and just doing my rounds for voting on Marc's entries. Your plugin certainly sounds great! Let me know, if somebody develops it, I'm in. :-)
